How a Poem Speaks

Looking at five different basic elements of a poem — Rhythm & Meter, Sound Patterns, Structure, Syntax & Diction, and Theme — we will learn a way to approach poems by assessing how they utilize these elements to varying degrees. Understanding where a poem is intended to “grab” the reader will help build a better appreciation for poetry that might at first seem unapproachable to our modern ears and comprehension.
