Welcome Letter from Joy!

Hello Poetry Society of Vermont Members,

Welcome to all our new members! I am delighted to introduce myself as your 2024-2025 President. I am Robyn Joy, or just Joy, and I am a long-time Montpelier resident. My poems have been published nationally and internationally and if you are in Central Vermont, you may have attended one of my rabbit&wolf poetry events. You can find full bios for the entire 2024-2025 PSOV Executive Council here.

I am very excited to step into this role in the middle of what seems like a wonderful trajectory. In 2023, PSOV shifted our workshops from a critic-centered model to one that encourages positive discussion about the work. This feels like a more nourishing way to improve our writing and I will encourage us to continue this path. We will also keep using mechanisms for accessibility such as online registration, statewide locations, and hybrid options. Our next workshop will be in the Spring on Saturday, May 11. You can also mark your calendars for our Summer Festival on August 10, and our Fall Workshop on October 12.

The Mountain Troubadour submissions are open with a deadline of February 1. I served on the editorial board in 2023 and the volume of talent among us is not surprising, but it is stunning to see it all at once. If you’ve never submitted to our anthology or have never submitted your work at all, please consider it now. It’s a great opportunity to have your poetry reviewed by your peers and receive feedback whether you are published in the anthology or not.

In 2023, PSOV hosted in-person and Zoom member readings across the state, and I look forward to continuing to provide spaces for members to read their work. We are working with Montpelier’s PoemCity to schedule a member reading at Kellogg Hubbard Library in April which will include open mic time. Our website and the weekly Poetry newsPost, which members are automatically subscribed to, will have all the details as they unfold.

Speaking of the website, be sure to take some time to peruse it – Elizabeth McCarthy has done some wonderful work with this.

Finally, don’t forget to renew your 2024 membership dues to continue having access to member benefits. While you are at it, encourage a friend to register and become a member of the Poetry Society of Vermont.

As your leader, I will bring the energy of safe, nurturing spaces for both new and established poets to connect with each other and with our burgeoning poetry community. I can’t wait to meet or reacquaint myself with all of you in the coming year!

Robyn Joy
