Memorial Celebration ~Vermont Poet

Phyllis Rachel Larrabee

PSOV member, Frederick Sawyer asked that we share the following events in celebration of his mother, playwright and poet, Phyllis Rachel Larrabee who was born on September 30, 1938, in Newark, N.J. and lived in Vermont from July 1975 until her death on April 7, 2021.

Unitarian Church, Montpelier, Vermont:

June 21, 5pm Readings of Plays & Poetry

June 22, 9am Community Poetry Reading, 2pm Music & Spoken Word and more poetry until 5pm

Green Mount Cemetery:

June 23, 11am Headstone Unveiling and Poetry Readings (if weather cooperates)

Beginning at 5pm on Friday there will be readings of some of Phyllis’s plays and from her more than 40 collections of poetry at the Unitarian Church in Montpelier, Vermont. Also at the Unitarian Church on Saturday, June 22nd, there will be a community reading of Phyllis’s poetry starting at 9am, and at 2pm Michael Arnowitt will perform and play music while his wife Therisa does spoken word with some of Phyllis’ poetry. Sunday, June 23rd there will be a headstone unveiling ceremony at Green Mount Cemetery, with readings of her poetry if the weather cooperates.

Gina Jenkins will be showing a collage exhibit works inspired by and along with Phyllis’ poetry during the event, an exhibit that was held at the Saint John in the Mountains Episcopal Church last September and October.

Phyllis Rachel Larrabee, poet, playright, storyteller, feminist and grandmother, was the first recipient of the Grace Paley Scholarship Fund for Vermont Writers, offered by the Vermont Local of the National Writers Union in recognition of her work, specifically her new book of poetry, Shoveler on the Roof.

Over nearly 50 years, Phyllis lived in Rochester, Burlington, Calais, Plainfield, Woodbury, Greensboro and Montpelier, Vermont. At 82, she no longer shoveled snow off her roof.
