First Call~Summer Contests 2024

The Poetry Society of Vermont is pleased to announce the 2024 Summer Contests. PSOV members may submit poems to all seven contests. The Troubadour Awards will be judged at this time for Selected Works poems previously submitted to The Mountain Troubadour. Summer Contest winners and second place poems will be published in The Mountain Troubadour 2025. The Summer Contests are open and will close at midnight on July 31, 2024. Please carefully read the Summer Contests descriptions, submission guidelines and instructions below.

Judges & Award Selections:

Judges: Summer Contest poems will be judged by a select group of poets chosen by the PSOV Summer Contests Co-chairs and committee. The judges are non-PSOV Members with extensive experience in writing and publishing poetry. Many have experience teaching poetry or working in the literary community.

Summer Contest Awards: For each of the seven contests, judges will name one winner, receiving a $50 prize, and publication in the upcoming Mountain Troubadour. Judges will also name an Honorable Mention for six of the contests; the Abelson contests awards $25 to a second-place winner. All six Honorable Mentions and the second-place winner will be published in The Mountain Troubadour.


Summer Contests:

CAROL AND ARNOLD ABELSON AWARD. An event or place that fosters opposition, controversy, and/or social change. The event can be historical or reflect a current political situation. 40 line limit. First prize is $50, second prize, $25. Both first and second prize poems will be printed in The Mountain Troubadour.

MARY MARGARET AUDETTE MEMORIAL AWARD. Light or humorous verse, 32 line limit. Prize for the winning poem is $50. Both the Winner and the Honorable mention will be printed in The Mountain Troubadour

J.RICHARD BARRY MEMORIAL AWARD. Vermont or country theme, 32 line limit. Prize for the winning poem is $50. Both the Winner and the Honorable mention will be printed in The Mountain Troubadour

MARIAN GLEASON MEMORIAL AWARD. Any theme, 20 line limit. Prize for the winning poem is $50. Both the Winner and the Honorable mention will be printed in The Mountain Troubadour.

GOLDSTEIN MEMORIAL AWARD. Any theme, 40-line limit. Prize for the winning poem is $50. Both the Winner and the Honorable mention will be printed in The Mountain Troubadour.

LAURA J. SPOONER MEMORIAL AWARD Best love poem, 40 line limit. Prize for the winning poem is $50. Both the Winner and the Honorable mention will be printed in The Troubadour.

CHRIS WHITE MEMORIAL AWARD Theme: science, science fiction or math, 25-line limit. Prize for the winning poem is $50. Both the Winner and the Honorable mention will be printed in The Troubadour.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Membership dues must be paid.
  • One poem per contest.
  • Font 12-pt. Times New Roman.
  • Line count (as specified for each contest above) including:
    •  title, any epigraph, and all lines and empty line spaces between lines & stanzas.
  • No previously published poems.
  • Simultaneous submissions are accepted, notify us immediately if accepted elsewhere.
  • Do not include your name anywhere in the submitted poem document.
  • Submit poems in separate MSWord doc or Google doc files
    • use the poem title as the document file name
    • include the contest name in the header or top of document
  • We do not accept AI-generated work.
  • Submissions that do not follow the guidelines and instructions will not be considered.

  • Log into your Google Account (gmail account)
    • Open the PSOV Summer Contests Submission Form 
    • Fill out the form questions, enter poem title(s) and upload your poem(s) as either a MSWord Document or Google Document for the contests you wish to enter, click on “submit” at the end of the form.
    • Each poem must be in its own document (MSWord or Google doc.)
    • Add all poem titles and upload poems for all contests in one form submission.
  • Be sure you have followed the Submission Guidelines above before submitting.

  • Email your poems to the Summer Contest Co-Chairs:

  • Use the subject line: “Summer Contests [your first initial, last name].” 
  • Send each poem in a separate MSWord doc file attached to one email message
    • max of 3 poem file attachments to Juliana

  • In the body of the email, include:
    •  your full name, email address and list of poem titles and corresponding contest names.
  • Be sure you have followed the Submission Guidelines above before sending.

Troubadour Awards:

The Troubadour Awards are chosen from the Selected Works poems in the previous publication of The Mountain Troubadour, members do not have to do anything at this time to be considered for these awards.

Outside judges select winners and honorable mentions for the Corinne Eastman Davis Award and the Arthur Wallace Peach Memorial Award. These awards are given for the best Selected Works poems in the current issue of The Mountain Troubadour.

  • The Corinne Eastman Davis Memorial Award is awarded for the best poem by a member who has not previously won this honor; the prize is $20. 
  • The Arthur Wallace Peach Memorial Award is awarded for the best poem by a member; the prize is $20.
  • The Davis and Peach Awards are announced in the fall, the poets names and poem titles are listed in next year’s Mountain Troubadour. A certificate of honorable mention is also given for the Davis and Peach Award and listed in The Mountain Troubadour.
